April 2006 - Arizona Transit Association Annual Meeting - Commuter/Intercity Passenger Rail in Arizona Symposium

The following items were discussed during the meeting. Action items are included below.

  • Smyth reported that we have not heard from the American Public Transportation Association relative to the grant request to support the SWRC symposium to be presented at the April 2006 AzTA Annual Meeting. (Action Item - Smyth to follow up on the grant)
  • The Coalition will accept the request to present a workshop at the “Rural Transportation Summit at Rio Rico on January 19, 2006. (Action Item - Smyth to notify Bill Leister, Smyth and Bohannan to develop the presentation)
  • Bohannan reported that the information requested by Senator Thayer Verschoor, Chair of the Senate Transportation Committee has been sent to the Senator
  • Bohannan and Pearsall reported that the City of Surprise and other West Valley cities are discussing commuter rail. ADOT is providing data for their discussions. (Action Item - Bohannan and Pearsall to continue dialog with the West Valley group)
  • The draft “white paper” as talking points in support of commuter rail in Maricopa County prepared by Morse is still being revised by Bohannan, Pearsall and Bill Lindley.
  • Pearsall report[s] that MAG and RPTA has asked ADOT to assist and take the lead in the Commuter Rail Study authorized and funded ($5 million) by Prop. 400. ADOT will try to obtain Federal Matching Funds. The study is currently planned for 2007.
  • Pearsall continues to develop cost data relative to implementing both intercity and commuter rail.
  • The Coalition agrees that we need to develop a brochure to get our message out. (Action Item - Herr-Cardillo to ask Steve Farley for his assist)
  • SWRC Coalition Letterhead discussion was postpone until the next meeting.
